2012 World Championships Starts and Finishes with Bang!!!

The moment had come.  I walked to my disc, marked it and looked up at the scoreboard for first time during the final nine.  We were tied, Val was parked for her par and I had a shot to birdie.  “After all this, I am going to make this one”, I thought to myself and canned my 35-footer uphill for the win! I felt like it was going to be a tight battle for the entire duration of worlds, due to the type of courses we were playing.  Most of the holes were wooded and of a birdie-able length.   In … Continue reading

World Championship Practice Brings the Heat

After Monday Fun-day in Philly, we headed for North Carolina, to practice for the 2012 World Championships.  We arrived in Charlotte Tuesday night, the fourth of July, and celebrated Independence Day at Brackett’s Bluff for the weekly doubles night.  Brackett’s Bluff is one of my favorite courses in Charlotte and it was a nice homecoming to play that course before it is removed in October.  See how you can help “Save the Bluff” at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/savethebluff/. For the rest of the week, we practiced hard, trying to get acclimated to the heat and humidity.  Don and Mike decided to drive with … Continue reading

Delaware Disc Golf Challenge Lives up to Name

After Fort Steilacoom, we spent the day in Seattle, then grabbed our buddy, Mike Powell, from Santa Cruz and headed to see my parents in Idaho.  We got into Caldwell late Monday night, slept for a few hours, did some laundry and began our 46 hours of driving time that would lead us to our next stop, the Delaware Disc Golf Challenge.  We began our journey Tuesday early afternoon, stopping that night to play Riverpark Disc Golf Course in Riverdale, UT.  We continued to take turns driving through the night and the entire next day.  Near sunset we stopped again, this … Continue reading

Let the tour begin!

My first bona-fide disc golf tour is underway. After a mini tour a few weeks ago, consisting of a return to the Open division at the Steady Ed Lakeport tourney (T4th) and a solid 3rd in Masters at the Beaver State Fling NT, I am embarking on a tour of the east coast starting with the Delaware Disc Golf Challenge. Thanks to my cousin Mark Stiles, I have played the grueling Iron Hill course before when we took a tour of MD, DE, and PA courses a few years ago. This course is unlike any I had ever played. If … Continue reading

Beaver State Fling & Fort Steilacoom Open Bring Putting Woes

The Beaver State Fling is one of those tournaments that everyone on tour looks forward to.  The weather is usually great, the courses are beautiful, the event is always well run, and there is the potential for a good payday as the BSF has one of the highest payouts on tour.  We got into town with plenty of time to practice and played each course several times.  During the week, we enjoyed leisurely evenings by the fire in our friend’s fishing cabin where we stayed with Zoe Andyke and Dowdy.  During the first round, I came out of the box … Continue reading

Tour de Pacific Northwest

Following the Master’s Cup Don and I had a difficult decision to make.   There was a national tour in two weeks in Kansas City, MO, then another one two weeks later in Portland, OR, followed by a trip all the way across the country to Charlotte, NC.  The idea of travelling half way across the country and back, then all the way back across the entire country, all within a month did not seem cost effective right in the middle of the tour season.  In addition, the open women’s field for the KC Wide Open was only at five women, … Continue reading

Steady Ed Master’s Cup Hits Close to Home

The Steady Ed Master’s Cup, held in Santa Cruz, CA at the famed De Laveaga Disc Golf Course was an exhilarating tournament.  This national tour event is unique due to the its setting in the Santa Cruz foothills, its scenic and signature holes, and its challenging fairways and greens.  De Laveaga has 27 different holes that require every kind of shot in your bag.  Although I predominately throw sidearm shots, I also had to through lots of rollers, tomahawks and backhands all weekend to play this course.  Many shots on the course required “do or die” decisions; tight gaps, fast … Continue reading

Disc Golfers’ Future Happiness Depends on Women

Dear Men, Your future happiness depends on women who play disc golf.  As a woman disc golfer, I want as many women playing disc golf as I can find.  Camaraderie, Competition, Conversation….there are lots of reasons, many of the same reasons that you like to play with your buddies. But, why should you care if there are women out there? I know some of you say that you play disc golf to get AWAY from your wife and family for a few hours.  But, after experiencing the Women’s Global Event this past weekend, a few conversations sparked some new insight … Continue reading

Thank you Dela, may I please have another?

Well, it is that time of year again at Delaveaga Disc Golf course in Santa Cruz, CA.  The course goes to the all-long layout to challenge the best players in the world as they vie for one of the most coveted titles on tour, The 27th Annual “Steady” Ed Memorial Masters Cup presented by DGA.  Volunteers are mowing and weed whacking away to bring the course to its most groomed look that is epic Delaveaga. With the shiny new baskets in their most challenging spots, the course is stingy on birdies while there are more bogies, doubles, and triples out there … Continue reading

New FUN Record Set at Daisy Chains Women’s Global Event

The First Annual Women’s Global Event took place over Mother’s Day weekend and included global participation by over 600 women in over 40 different events.  This event was designed to promote women’s disc golf and get women from around the world playing against each other on the same day, regardless of location.  The event encouraged women who had never competed before to play in a supportive environment of other disc golfing women.  I played the Daisy Chains Event in Watsonville, CA at the Pinto Lake Disc Golf Course which attracted over 50 women, and had some of the highest participation … Continue reading
